Think of it as holiday season for budget conscious fashionistas. There comes a time every year when retailers offer customers the discounts they typically reserve for the friends and families of employees.
It’s always exciting when Shopbop.com holds their annual event, as the e-tailer of celebrity fave brands like Alice + Olivia and Clover Canyon rarely offers discounts of any kind.
There was a point during awards season when it seemed as if we were getting amazing red-carpet looks from Academy Award winning actress Lupita Nyong’o everyday.
She might have been new to the entertainment scene, but Lupita took to red-carpet fashion like a fish to water, making few (if any) style missteps.
Following her big award win and extended press tour, Lupita has been laying low taking a much deserved break.
She’s rightfully earned the time off, but that doesn’t mean her fans haven’t been craving their daily dose of Lupita fashion.
Luckily for us Lupita came out of hiding to attend Marie Claire’s Fresh Faces Party where she served as the belle of the ball, having snagged the mag’s May 2014 cover.
Lupita was all smiles (as usual) as she mingled with guests and her fellow Marie Claire cover girls Elle Fanning and Kate Mara.
Opting for a fit-and-flare dress silhouette we haven’t seen from her before, Lupita wore a Giambattista Valli frock from the fashion house’s Fall 2013 Couture collection.
The intricately detailed dress featured an array of hand embroidered blue flowers that spread out from the waist into both the bodice and the full circle skirt.
The only quibble to be found with Lupita’s look is her choice of footwear. As great as Lupita’s style is, she seems to almost always get it wrong when it comes to shoes.
This time it’s a pair of silver glitter Christian Louboutin ‘Elisa’ pumps ($625) that let Lupita down. Paired with such an amazing dress, the relatively plain heels leave a lot to be desired.
Nonetheless, the shoes are a minor complaint, and everything from the ankles up is pure perfection.
Yes, hunty! Jourdan Dunn you betta werq those Rupert Sanderson London for Antonio Berardi lace-up thigh high boots like the rent is due!
Model Jourdan Dunn was in attendance at The Vogue Festival 2014, an annual event sponsored by Vogue UK where some of the biggest names in fashion unite for a weekend of interviews and industry discussion.
Anyone who has even the slightest interest in fashion is familiar with the trendsetting style of Solange Knowles. She’s a fashion industry darling who’s always shining a spotlight onto emerging designers (like Boxing Kitten).
From the moment she burst onto the music scene rocking dog-tags and a floor length headwrap in her video for On & On, Erykah Badu has continuously pushed the boundaries of fashion, breaking barriers while she’s at it (see: Erykah Badu for Givenchy).
And then there’s singer/songwriter Ledisi. Her fame might not be as widespread the other ladies, but the eight-time Grammy nominee has had a long and storied history in the industry, with a personal style that’s as strong and vibrant as her vocal ability.
Together the three women— Ledisi, Erykah, and Solange— complete the cover girl trifecta of the May 2014 issue of ESSENCE, the mag’s annual Beauty issue.
She’s known for her headful of amazing dreadlocks, but Ledisi is quick to let ESSENCE know that she doesn’t take her hair too seriously:
“I experiment a lot, dyeing it and constantly switching styles to grab attention. My hair is one of my best accessories and changing it helps express who I am.”
Erykah Badu has been doing her own damn style thing since the day she entered the entertainment scene. Afro wigs, a shaved head, gold lipstick, red lipstick, six inch heels, sneakers…Erykah has worn it all.
Considering her soulful vibe and creative energy, it’s no surprise Givenchy creative director Riccardo Tisci found a muse in Erykah, saying she was one of the inspirations behind his Spring 2014 Givenchy Collection.
With her high fashion status officially certified, Erykah tells ESSENCE that her hair and style are about more than just looks:
“I view my hair and clothes as functional art. I’m my own stylist and I love it, but I am not trying to make a statement.”
She makes it clear to ESSENCE that her eclectic style is no accident. It’s a definite choice:
“We all have the option of how we want to express ourselves through our life, hair, style or whatever we decide. We shouldn’t be pigeonholed into any one category.”
Each of the ladies ESSENCE chose to front their beauty issue have their own distinct looks and styles, but a common thread is that they all are secure in their fashion choices, dressing for themselves and not for others.
Continuing to prove she’s a young fashion icon in the making, actress/singer Zendaya Coleman bucked current trends and did her own stylish thing on the orange carpet of Nickelodeon’s Kids’ Choice Awards 2014.
With a perfectly coiffed high bun paired with heavy bangs hairstyle, and the most beautiful shade of deep matte red on her lips, Zendaya had the foundation set for what would be the most unique, fashionably risky look of the night.
She started out in the industry as one fourth of girl group Destiny’s Child. That gig naturally lent itself to the next phase of DC member Kelly Rowland’s career as a solo artist.
And now the Kisses Down Low singer can add a new title to her ever expanding portfolio— Celebrity Caress Fabulista.
A Caress Fabulista knows the importance of enjoying everyday experiences in a fresh way, and Kelly says she’s excited to inspire women everywhere to start their day feeling fabulous by using the new Caress Fresh Body Wash Collection.
Kelly’s favorite scent from the new collection? Emerald Rush, as evidenced by her tonal green on tonal green ensemble.
Be sure to keep an eye out for the new Caress Fresh Body Wash Collection, which should be hitting shelves soon.
First Daughter Malia Obama has quite the bright future ahead of her. As she traverses through teen-hood and arrives at adulthood, Malia will have such a wealth of opportunities available to her, that she will have the ultimate freedom in deciding who she wants to be in this life.
Until she comes into her own though, Malia can take solace in the fact the she serves as an impeccably, yet age appropriately styled fashionista to whom the teen set can aspire.
The Obama ladies, including First Lady Michelle, and daughters Malia and Sasha are currently on a week-long educational and cultural exchange visit in China.
While being greeted upon their arrival by Chinese President Xi Jinping and his wife Peng Liyuan, Malia opted for a chic little high street number from Topshop.
Because she doesn’t make red-carpet appearances as often as some of her Hollywood cohorts like Zoe Saldana and Diane Kruger, actress Jennifer Connelly is often overlooked as one of the industry’s most fashionable ladies.
Jennifer is on the promo tour for her latest film, Noah, which is based on (you guessed it!) the biblical story of Noah and the Ark.
While the film may or may not creatively leave little to be desired, Jennifer is making the most of her red carpet moments.
At the Mexico City premiere of Noah, Jennifer wowed in a Givenchy couture gown from the French fashion house’s 2009 collection.
With such an intricately detailed dress, the need for accessories was nil. Jennifer wisely decided to skip any additional accoutrements, choosing softly tousled waves to complete her look.
At the Madrid premiere of Noah, Jennifer switched things up a bit with her look, opting for a more casual ensemble. But ‘casual’ doesn’t mean she ditched the couture, dahlings.
Jennifer wore one of my favorite dresses, from one of my favorite collections during couture season— a mint green, long sleeve fit-and-flare mini dress with a jewel embellished round collar from the Giambattista Valli Spring 2014 Couture collection.
Again Jennifer opted for minimal accessories, using them for maximum impact. Nude, barely there heeled sandals provided a leg lengthening effect.
Her sleek, pulled back hairstyle allowed her bright pink lip to pop.
