There’s a reason the Supers of the ’90s were in fact supermodels. Cindy, Kate, Naomi — they were more than just their looks; they were household names, so popular that over time they became brands. The world got to know the personalities behind the faces. We got to know the Supers as real people, and that’s ironically what made them larger than life. Getting to know them, is what set them apart.

Over the years though, designers decided they wanted their designs to be the focus of their runway shows, not the models who wore them. With each new fashion season, with each new crop of girls, personalities became nonexistent, expression on the runway frowned upon, and that era of the Super faded into obscurity.

We’re once again privy to the personalities behind the names, and with this new era, it seems a resurgence of Supers is poised to happen.

Fast forward about a decade or two, a name or two, a face or two or three who managed to break the mold yet fail to completely recapture that Super heyday. Fashion is now accessible to the masses in a way it never before was. The internet has put anyone who has access to a computer (or a smartphone), within reach of an unending font of fashion knowledge.

Back are the days of fashion fans getting know their favorite designers, and those designers’ favorite models, on first name bases. We’re once again privy to the personalities behind the names, and with this new era, it seems a resurgence of Supers is poised to happen.

Enter MTV, and it’s now iconic televised fashion magazine House of Style.

House of Style was a ’90s MTV show focused on fashion and design, that capitalized on the world’s growing interest in ‘the Supers’ and their glamorous lifestyles.

Starring Cindy Crawford as host, House of Style debuted January 1, 1989, chronicling Cindy’s journey as she interviewed celebs, talked fashion with the top designer names of the day, and gave viewers a behind the scenes peek into her life, and those of her supermodel friends.

Over the course of a decade, House of Style made household names of Cindy, and subsequent House of Style hosts Rebecca Romijn and Molly Sims.

Now in 2012, MTV is hoping to do it again, this time with world’s number one and number two models respectively, Joan Smalls and Karlie Kloss, debuting the two as the new hosts of a relaunched House of Style.

If there are any two models in the game right now who have what it takes — style, personality, and of course looks — to usher in a new era of ‘Supers,’ Joan and Karlie are your girls.

Between the two of them, they’ve graced the cover of every influential fashion mag, walked in all the top runway shows, and have snagged major ad campaigns. So who better to take us behind the scenes of today’s fashion industry?

During their first outing as House of Style hosts, Joan and Karlie take us along with them as they traverse Paris Fashion Week. We watch the girls as they get ready to rip the runways, make room for normal things like boyfriend time and hanging out with their siblings, and of course chat it up with their fellow model friends.

The standout of scenes of the first episode MTV’s relaunched House of Style though, are the ones in which we get to see Joan and Karlie’s radiant personalities shine through. It’s evident as the girls giggle with each other while reminiscing over their grade-school days, that even though they lead celebrity lives, they’re real people; they’re relatable.

Like the legends that came before them, it’s that behind the scenes look, that chance to really get to know who they are, that will launch Joan and Karlie into true ‘Super’ status.

Wonderfully written article M! It would be nice to have the Supermodels back. I used to love to watch them on different shows in the 90’s when i was wee one, lol.
