Werq, Batch? British actress Helen Mirren wore a decidedly interesting look to the 2011 British Comedy Awards. The Dame donned a Dolce & Gabbana Fall 2011 star print and lace calf length dress, pairing it with black tights and black heels, and black leather gloves. Helen has never shied away from wearing adventurous outfits, and this isn’t her first time wearing Dolce & Gabbana, but I’m not so sure this look is a winner.
Some might argue that a woman of Helen’s age is long past the point of wearing a dress of this style. Sure there’s a time and a place for everything, and at some point you have to stop wearing certain things, but when you’re a celebrity the rules are kind of lax.
And even if you aren’t famous, there are exceptions to every rule. If you have the right attitude and confidence, age isn’t anything but a number when it comes to fashion.
Helen’s age, and the relative appropriateness of the style of this dress aren’t the issue with this look. I think it starts to take a wrong turn when the accessories are added.
The star print on the Dolce & Gabbana frock is eye catching to say the least, and doesn’t require much in the way of jewelry. Helen’s necklace takes away from the overall effect of her ensemble.
The leather gloves also detract from the outfit. While I like the tights on Helen, the gloves and the necklace push the look from daring to doing a bit too much. Regardless, I love how adventurous Helen is with her style. Maybe you think she got it wrong on this occasion, but at least she takes risks.
If you want to take a similar style risk, Celeb Boutique has a very simlar designer inspired star print and lace bodycon dress that costs a reasonable $160.
What do you think though? Did Helen take a fashion misstep? Or is her star style a step in the right fashion direction?
