Chambray: Meet denim’s lightweight and breezy cousin, and one of this summer’s top celebrity fashion trends.

Say hello to chambray, the denim-like fabric that’s not quite denim, but is equally as versatile and loved as its American standard textile cousin. A lightweight alternative to traditional denim, chambray has become one of the top celebrity fashion trends of this summer.

At this point you’re probably wondering what exactly is the difference between denim and chambray. Looks pretty much the same, right?

Well, they kind of are the same, both are typically made with cotton, and both are coarse textiles with low thread counts.

But where denim is often heavy and dense, chambray is usually light colored and always lightweight, two traits perfect for hot summer weather.

Perhaps this is why chambray has become a celeb fashion fave. It’s comfortable to wear, easy to style, and can suit a wide variety of style sensibilities.

Take for instance Olivia Munn, Kristen Stewart, and Kate Bosworth. They’re three actresses with little in common besides their chosen professions, yet they’ve all found a way to make chambray their own.

Olivia took to the streets of NYC wearing Sam & Lavi’s ‘Estee’ dress ($128), glamming up the casual frock with a dab of matte red lipstick, and nude platform heels.

K. Stew on the other hand kept things all the way relaxed, doing the double ‘denim’ thing by pairing her light wash partially buttoned chambray shirt with dark wash skinny jeans.

Kate split the difference between Kristen’s laid back look and Olivia’s dressier styling, by wearing her Sam & Lavi ‘Nora’ tank top with a combination of shorts and heels.

No matter how you choose to wear it, you’ll be right on trend if you adopt chambray into your summer wardrobe.
