He’s been out of the fashion game for a minute, taking time out to make an award winning directorial debut with A Single Man, but designer Tom Ford has returned to womenswear after a six year hiatus. His much talked about, but extremely secretive Spring 2011 collection presentation was held back in September during Mercedes Benz Fashion Week, and very few details about the show or the designs have leaked. Until now. The December 2010 issue of Vogue US features the first look at Tom Ford’s highly anticipated return to fashion.
In an editorial aptly entitled Mr. Ford Returns, models Karen Elson, Stella Tennant, Amber Valletta, Joan Smalls, Anja Rubik, Carolyn Murphy, Edita Vilkeviciute, and Mr. Ford himself, give us a sneak peek of what to expect when the complete collection is revealed in January.
About his return to womenswear, his inspiration behind the collection, and what finally pushed him to create for the ladies again, the designer had this to say:
“It’s about individuality. Real clothes, real women. For a fashionable woman aged 25 to 75. That’s why I literally put many of my own muses in the show. I hear them say, ‘God, I can’t find that anywhere!’ ” Women friends had been “begging” him to make them suits as soon as they heard he was starting a menswear line; he couldn’t find anything to buy his mother; it all built up. “I want this to be somewhere a woman knows she can go when she wants a great jacket—not a fake expensive jacket, something that has intrinsic value. I don’t think fashion has to change every five minutes. I’d like these to be clothes you can wear for a long time—ten, 20 years; pass on to your daughter. Why buy vintage when you can open your own closet!”
