Lights! Camera! Action! Hollywood!…Oscars 2007

by Norell Alesse on February 26, 2007

Unless you live under a rock, or perhaps you have a real life ;) , then you know the 79th annual Academy Awards went down last night. And besides the event being the biggest night in movies, it’s also one of the biggest nights in fashion. For an awards show that’s usually a bore, the best part is seeing what everyone’s wearing on the red carpet.

Oscars 2007 - Penelope CruzOscars 2007 - Nicole Kidman

In one of my favorite looks of the night, Best Actress nominee Penelope Cruz looks gorgeous in a strapless Versace gown. The train on this bad boy is to die for, and its pale blush color is perfect against Penelope’s olive skin. Nicole Kidman made a bold choice with this red Balenciaga dress. The oversized bow is my favorite part of her look. It takes confidence to not only wear such a bold color, but to also wear a dress with such a bold accessory.

Oscars 2007 - Reese WitherspoonOscars 2007 - Gwyneth Paltrow

Last year’s Best Actress winner Reese Witherspoon may be going through a divorce, but this awards season, she’s proven that she’s taking everything in stride with a series of A+ red carpet choices. Her latest, a purple strapless gown, is designed by Nina Ricci, who Reese has been wearing during this entire awards season. Gwyneth Paltrow walked the red carpet in Zac Posen. I love this dress, it’s as daring as anything Posen has done, but the color doesn’t work for Gwyneth. Her skin looks washed out against the hue of the dress. Perhaps a darker color, or something less close to skin tone, would have worked better.

Oscars 2007 - Helen MirrenOscars 2007 - Kirsten Dunst

Best Actress winner Helen Mirren proves that you’re never too old to be sexy. She looks completely glam in this beaded gown by Christian LaCroix. She’s definitely showing those young starlets how it’s done, starlets like Kirsten Dunst. Kiki Dunst provides us with arguably the biggest flop of the night. This Chanel couture gown just hangs off Kirsten, and the color of the gown paired with her dark lipstick just do nothing for her. I’ve seen this dress on the runway, and it looked much better, I guess it just wasn’t made for non-models.

Oscars 2007 - Cate BlanchettOscars 2007 - Cameron Diaz

Cate Blanchett has continually proven that she’s a fashionista to be watched. She looks great in this gunmetal Armani Prive’ dress. I don’t think there are many others who could have worn this dress as well as she did. I don’t really know what to say about Cameron Diaz’s look. Initially I liked it, but the more I’ve seen it, the less I’ve liked. The collar of this Valentino gown reminds me of a huge ‘peter pan’ collar. It’s distracting. I do love her lighter brown hair, though. And her recent Hawaiian vacations have worked wonders for her. Her skin looks great against her white gown and her lighter hair.

Oscars 2007 - Jennifer LopezOscars 2007 - Jennifer HudsonOscars 2007 - Beyonce Knowles

Lastly we have the divas of the night. I loved Jennifer Lopez’ Marchesca gown, which featured a jeweled encrusted neckline. This gown wasn’t a favorite of some, but I’m a sucker for an empire waist. Goddess gowns are so feminine, you can’t help but feel like a princess. Best Supporting Actress winner Jennifer Hudson took a fashion risk with this Oscar de la Renta ensemble. Her look has been bashed all over the ‘net, particularly her metallic shrug. But call me crazy, I actually liked this look. Yes, I even liked the shrug. Feel free to disagree, I love hearing other’s opinions. Last but certainly not least, we have Miss Beyonce Knowles. There’s nothing wrong with her Armani Prive gown (thought it was Dereon didn’t you?), but there’s was nothing special about it either. I’m a Beyonce fan, but I’m tired of seeing the same looks on her. It’s time for a change with her. Maybe a darker hair color, or perhaps she should follow the current celebrity trend and cut her hair.

Helen Mirren is amazing! Every English woman should be proud of her.

I loved JLo’s gown as well. I absolutely love Cate Blanchett’s gown, she looks so much better than the runway model, even though her gown was modified a bit.

BeyoncĂ©’s look is getting tired. If she doesnt cut her hair, I’d at least like to see a chignon every now and then. If I hadn’t seen the Prive gown before last night, I sure would have thought it was Dereon. I’d like to see her take some risks and not be so predictable.

I agree, I loved JLo’s gown, reminded me of a Greek goddess and it looked great on her.
